Overview

No fruit divides opinion like the durian. It comes wrapped in a large husk bristling with stiff spines, and inside carries a creamy flesh of penetrating aroma and complex flavor: some call it the best fruit in the world and others cannot stand to be near it. The tree is a giant — 25 to 40 meters in the forest, though under cultivation it rarely passes 12 — with a conical crown and evergreen leaves.

Culture

Plant it for the tree it will become, not the bag it arrives in: a cultivated specimen reaches twelve meters and needs that room from the start. It asks for deep, well-drained soil and the warm, humid conditions of our lowlands. It is a tree of patience: the first harvest comes after several years, and once established it produces for decades.

Edible Uses

What is eaten is the flesh around each seed, creamy and strongly aromatic, fresh and by the spoon. It is the part that made the durian famous, in both directions.
