Pouteria caimito

The size of the plant and of its bag can vary a little from the photograph — each one grows at its own pace. We keep them as consistent as we can.
Overview
Abiu is a bright yellow fruit with white, translucent, jelly-like pulp, sweet and mild, with a flavor that recalls rambutan. It's native to South America up to Costa Rica, and so well liked that it's often sold in local markets. A well-selected tree can give hundreds of fruits a year, and up to two crops. To eat it, just cut it in half and scoop out the pulp with a spoon.

A tree of the warm, humid lowlands that needs moisture and warmth all year. It grows in full sun or dappled shade, tolerates wet soils and prefers acid soil. From seed it can take up to 8 years to bear, grafted it bears at 3–4. It's best pruned to about 4 meters for easy harvesting. Planting distance: 3–5 m.
Edible Uses
It's eaten raw when fully ripe, or in sorbets, ice cream and fruit salads, where it pairs beautifully with the tang of orange. The fruit, up to 10 cm across, has thin skin and bruises easily, so it keeps only a few days. If not fully ripe it releases a latex that sticks to the lips.
